Rocks and Slippers...

Almost the instant I clicked ‘Publish’ on my last blog post, where I celebrated the end of sickness in our household and began to look to the year ahead, I came down with another cold. This one was swift and mean, leaving me no choice but to spend yet another weekend curled up in my bed, drifting between sleep and silent contemplation as I listened to my precious family downstairs doing weekend-y things and longing I was there with them.

And so, I have been purposefully trying to stick to my NYR to ‘Do Less. Be More’. It means I haven’t really had much to blog about, as I haven’t really achieved much (that you can see that is). It’s a little more challenging than I had predicted as I actually have to stop myself doing things! Usually the moment I am child-free I set about getting things together for one project or another, or I cram in all of the things I just can’t do with a little person under my feet, like build the shelves in my garage. But this past week I haven’t, and it’s been wonderfully refreshing. At first I felt a huge pressure to make something (pressure from myself that is, as I really don’t know where else it would come from) but now that pressure is less so. I have actually discovered that I am in some way liberated by this and creativity has become slightly more organic. Is that what I mean? I think it is…?

Anyway, I wanted to stop by the say ‘Hello!’ and to show you what I have been doing between all the moments of not very much.

On a whim I purchased some pain pens to doodle on some of the beach treasures I bought back from last year’s holiday. Annoyingly I picked up a silver pen instead of a white one, but that’s because I had a very tired toddler with me at the time and I simply wasn’t paying enough attention!

They’re not the very best, but I enjoyed myself and would definitely do more of this! As each pebble is like a miniature work of art there really is no pressure to keep going until you have a masterpiece because they’re over pretty quickly anyway! (Although I could have happily carried on all day, I ran out of pebbles)

I also, again on a whim, bought a pattern to make some crochet slippers. This is something I have though about making for a long time, but I never got round to it. My week of slowing down meant that when the thought came into my head this time I was actually able to say ‘YES! Lets make!’ I made them in an evening whilst watching a film and stopping only for cheesecake; it might be quicker without the break for dessert but hey :) (It was Millionare Shortbread Cheesecake you understand.)

So that’s where I am, where are you? When was the last time you slowed down to just Be-ing? Maybe give it a go and see what happens; it can only be good!

Thanks for stopping by,
See you soon
Hayley
